Abstract:
Type 2 diabetes is a multi-inheritance, heterogeneous group of disorders feature by a deficit in or loss to maintain normal glucose homeostasis. The most recent, it results from faults in insulin secretion and insulin action. The spread of type 2 diabetes has increased quickly in recent decades, tracking comparable increases in the trend of obesity. Obesity is a primary risk factor for the development of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes. Vigna species are a crucial origin of protein for humans, especially in tropical Africa and Asia, and several Vigna species have been domesticated in Asia. Recently, the Vigna species V. mungo was found to have anti-hyperglycemic effects in diabetic rats. Extracts of V. angularis improved blood glucose and cholesterol in mice fed a high fat diet. In addition, the hypoglycemic effects of V. angularis extracts were established in type 2 diabetes mellitus model KK-Ay mice and a streptozotocin-induced type 1 diabetes model. Another species of Vigna, V. nakashimae (VN), which is widely cultured in Korea, has not been reported to have any anti-hyperglycemic effects. In the present study, we investigated the anti-hyperglycermic effects by VN in the obesity-induced diabetes model. Here, we showed that VN significantly suppressed hyperglycemia and body weight in the obesity induced diabetes model. For the clinical trials, we also examined the toxic effects by VN in SD rats. We demonstrated that VN has no effects of toxic at the concentrations of 2000 mg/kg in the hematologic and physiological findings. Present study suggested that VN is possible to develop as a functional food for diabetes.
